In the warm and cheerful atmosphere World Prematurity Day was celebrated at the Perinatal Center of Almaty.  Doctors and nurses were visited by their former patients – premature children born 1-2 years ago. Toddlers have grown up, they already go to kindergartens.

As the head of the neonatal resuscitation and intensive care unit of the city perinatal center Ainurym Sarbas said, in recent years there has been a positive dynamics in the survival of premature babies.

To recall, from 2009 to 2011 within “Breathe, baby” project the charity fund purchased medical equipment for the center for 86.3 million tenge. Those were respiratory apparatus, resuscitation tables, phototherapy apparatus and other equipment for newborns.

“For today about 10% of all babies born in our center, are born prematurely, their survival rate is 98-99%. On average, 750-950 out of 800-1000 premature babies survive. At the beginning of the 2000s the survival rate was about 50%, today the statistics has improved twofold. This is due to the improvement of conditions for keeping children, as well as new equipment and the advent of new methods of treatment and care for children,” Ainurim Sarbas said.

How can a holiday be without presents? Volunteers of the “Niyti Dobra” (“Threads of Good”) club knitted special woolen suits for kids. They were presented to young mothers at the city perinatal center and at the Center for Perinatology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. The set includes socks, a vest, a cap, a plaid and an octopus knitted toy, which creates a comfortable tactile environment for a newborn.
